WATER
In flooding, water typically spreads out and flows through the path of least resistance, especially toward substructures and lower floors. Porous materials, wood, sheetrock or other building materials, will soak up water, which can travel upward. The resulting effects can include discoloration, swelling, broken adhesive bonds, delaminating, warping and overall breakdown of building material. The more time elapses before treatment, the greater the damage. Even if the water evaporates unassisted, it can cause damage to ceilings, walls and contents.
TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS SAFE IN THE FUTURE:
1. Periodically check the hot water heater, washing machine hoses, dishwasher, refrigerator and ice makers to ensure they are secure, in good condition and leak free.
2. Clean your gutters every autumn to prevent backup and leaks.
FIRE/SMOKE
During a fire, smoke is driven by heat created flames. No matter where the fire originates, smoke may penetrate throughout a structure. Smoke also combines with humidity and can form corrosive residues that may cause secondary damage. Fire does burn, but residual smoke may burn as well. This is sometimes called etching, pitting or chemical burning. Quick response and action are critical. The more time that elapses before treatment, the greater the damage.
TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS SAFE IN THE FUTURE:
1. Place smoke alarm on each floor and store fire extinguishers within reach in the kitchen and utility areas.
2. Schedule service and cleaning annually for furnaces, heating systems, chimneys and fireplaces.
3. Avoid overloading electrical circuits. Check fuse boxes or circuit breakers to make sure there is never a combination of appliances that exceeds 1500 watts on the same circuit.
